Set goals with a range. Floor and Ceiling. Your number one goal – Get in the room!

I’ve seen a number of different opinions on how you should set goals for yourself and/or your brand in the music business. Some say aim high reach for mega stardom. Others say be realistic aim for obtaining a full time music career at any profile level. There are merits to both approaches.

Aspirations of mega stardom are romantic and can help with motivation. On the other hand, they often lead to disappointment and frustration.

Setting the Floor Threshold

The floor could be as simple, or not so simple, as obtaining a full time career as a musician. This is a big achievement. Often well beyond the means of many artists even talented ones!

If you are able to hang up your servers apron, paint brush, broom, or (insert tool) of occupation of choice, in exchange for a full time music career, then you have become a success in your own right. Pat yourself on the back. You deserve it.

Leave the threshold behind

Passing the threshold of the floor does not mean you can’t, or won’t, progress with momentum toward the ceiling. The ceiling, as you probably guessed, is the rock star, internationally acclaimed opera singer, or whatever else happens to be the pinnacle of your musical dream. Weather you make it to the ceiling or not is less important than the momentum you build, and the fun you have, in reaching for it.

The point is:

1. Cross through the floor threshold.
2. Get in the room.
3. Stay in there.
4. Reach for the ceiling.

Good luck.
