For my first post on Studio Manifesto I thought a mention of a new Open Music project involving artists on Broken Window Records might be a good place to start. As a sound engineer at Euphonic Sound , I work closely with all the artists on BWR. Recently, I introduced them to an online music colloboration social network called Indaba. They agreed that it was an ideal place to host collaborations between BWR artists and their fans. So there you have it. Our Open Music project is called Open Window and all you need to join is an Indaba Profile.

Open Window, begins with BWR artist Disaster, who is guitarist with Remi Stevens and the Gang of Thieves, and also writes and records for a new BWR project called Master Controller.

Disaster has two sessions available for collaboration on Indaba, blending elements of Indie Rock and Metal with an Electro sound. The music produced from Disaster’s Indaba sessions will be released in some form under the title “The Art Of Spilling Coffee,” and of course, all contributors will be credited for their creative efforts.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Indaba, here is a quick rundown:

Indaba is a musicians haven for creative collaboration, allowing artists from all over the world to exchange not only songs, but the stem files that together make up a song.

For example, you could upload two tracks of guitars, one track of bass, eight tracks which combine to form a drum kit, and four tracks of vocals. All of these tracks will collectively form an entire song. Upon request, other artists will be able to join your “session”, download your tracks, alter them through mixing and editing techniques, re-upload them, or simply add completely new tracks… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Clearly, this new type of open source music collaboration has the potential to change the way artists write, record, and release material.

Visit Indaba and start contributing. Feel free to follow me online as well, and to check out the sessions I’m currently involved in.

Happy Collaborating.
