Here is a great article detailing the lead up, release and success of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The record went through many hardships before release. The early release was actually due to radios playing early copies, and demand from fans. It saved the record industry from a down slope, and managed to stay on the Billboard 200 for 122 weeks. Its hard to imagine a record could obtaining this level of success again.
Nearly 27 years after its release, “Thriller” still stands as the best-selling studio album in the United States, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, which has certified it 28-times platinum. More than 50 million copies have been sold internationally, according to estimates.
