John Mayer Releases Augmented Reality Music Video
Cats: Music Business, Music Culture, Music Promotion|By: Connor
Have you ever wanted to be in a music video? With the help of a web cam and some fancy flash code, you can be. While you’re only in the video as an extra, augmented reality has a lot of potential. What is augmented reality? Essentially, it combines both real and virtual aspects, in real-time, and is 3-D. Common examples include the yellow first down line seen in football broadcasts, or the shot tracer that follows the puck in hockey games.
As an artist John Mayer has been on the forefront of emerging technologies, embracing the art of blogging and tweeting before it was trendy to do so. Today, however, Mayer has been able to make music and technology history as the first recording artist to release an augmented reality music video.
The music video for “Heartbreak Warfare,” from the upcoming Battle Studies album, is now featured on John Mayer’s website. After the Flash player loads, viewers can activate their webcam and hold up a printed or mobile version of the Battle Studies icon to their webcam, which, if aligned correctly, will prompt the video to begin playing with you as an extra in the background.
