Adam Moerder over at The New Yorker posted these pieces of advice for emerging artists in the music industry. The main things to take away from this list are: The more exposure your music gets, the better. Stay true to your values; engaging in number 6 is selling out, doing a commercial isn’t. The radio isn’t what it once was – more and more people are using iPods or other portable music solutions every day, and Direct to Fan business models are often more effective.

1. The music industry isn’t hurting, just the record industry.

2. Melvin Gibbs asserts that, while the financial pie may be smaller for today’s artists, they can get a larger piece of it.

3. Josh Deutsch recommends having your publishing company and record label working together, not against each other.

4. Get on “Grey’s Anatomy” and/or Rock Band. It’s more important than being on the radio.
