Money can’t buy you Love
Cats: Music Business, Music Promotion, Wisdom|By: Connor
But it can potentially buy you and your band promotion. Then comes the question, what kind of promotion to get? While Brian Hazard doesn’t have an answer, he lists a few types of promotion he wouldn’t purchase. Here’s a list of them:
Ads. – Not worth the investment, excepting if you already have a massive fanbase you need to make aware of an impending event.
Press. – Doesn’t sell music. Music sells music.
Radio Promotion. – Before investing, ask yourself who you are trying to reach, and what exactly you want them to do.
Compilation CD’s – Think long and hard before you even allow your song to appear on one of these, let alone pay for it to be there.
Promo CD’s – Spamming out promos results in one of two things: your music is ignored, or your music appears in a week or so online for 99 cents, undercutting your sales.
Song Contests. – Only recommended for the prizes.
Note that while all these options are declined, the solution is not to ignore promotion. Rather, you’re better off using the thousands of dollars you would have spent on something more tangible, and using the plethora of free promotional alternatives available in the digital age to make your mark.
So what would I spent that theoretical $5,000 on? I’ll have to get back to you on that one, because I honestly don’t know. I promote to establish and nurture a genuine relationship with my fans. While money can buy you “exposure,” it can’t buy you love. I’ll expand on my reasoning next time as I make the case for online-only promotion.
