Since lists are awesome, here’s a list of the six best music marketing tips, courtesy of We Are Listening

1. Email Is The Holy Grail
2. Passive Radio Is Passé
3. Get Professional Help
4. Stand Out
5. Follow The Leaders
6. Be An Outstanding Communicator

1. Always try to get more e-mail addresses. They are your lifeblood. Check out some professional e-mail marketing services if you haven’t already. I haven’t used any of these and so can’t offer any firsthand insight, but Mad Mimi, Mail Chimp and Emma come recommended, although Emma is pricey.

2. Targeted online radio is where its at. So far, Jango Radio seems to be the way to go: 30 bucks for 1000 targeted plays. Stay tuned for an upcoming post about Jango.

3. Professional, critical analysis and feedback of your songs can only be a good thing. Friends are more likely to sugar coat an opinion than an impartial party. Also find out what people who aren’t fans of your music style think about it – you may find you appeal to a different crowd than you thought.

4. Standing out doesn’t mean be louder. Think of unique offerings, something that your fans will remember, and be excited about. This will keep them coming back and paying attention to your e-mail updates, eager to see what you have in store for them next. Instead of saying ‘we can’t do that, its too expensive/discriminating/unlikely to succeed, try asking yourself ‘what would it be like if we could do that? What options would that open?’ This kind of thinking leads to innovation.

5. There’s no point in re-inventing the wheel – keep tabs on what others are doing in the industry, what works, what doesn’t. However, never forget that following in the footsteps of others shouldn’t prevent you from striking out on your own.

6. No matter how awesome and ground breaking your ideas are, they’re worthless if you can’t effectively communicate them to others. The better you are at this, the more likely your idea will catch on. Search amazon for communication, you’d be surprised at what comes up.
